Sonata form:
In music, sonata form describes the structure of a single movement of a larger work.
A movement written in sonata form may consist of the following sections:
Introduction
Exposition
Development
Recapitulation
Coda
Part I Introduction The Introduction’s primary function is to establish a larger scale of motion than would be possible by the Exposition alone. Some Introductions contain thematic material for the movement that follows, and they are often in a slow tempo.
COUNTER-MELODY PRE-ACCIDENT: DAD AND ME I When you pound a nail, you hold the hammer toward the end of the handle. Grip it halfway between tight and loose. Firmly. Loosen up, Kid. You’re pretty tense.
SILENCE Mrs. Smelser says that a soloist’s piece begins in the silence. You’ve got to mentally prepare for the piece you’re about to play. It’s your job to be aware of the big picture, the arc of thousands of notes, the masterpiece you want to weave with your simple tools: a stick strung with horsehair, a hollow box with four metal strings, four fingers, and a whole lot of heart. In the silence, you set your intention. Six years ago, in the silence that was the aftermath of The Accident, I set my intention to become a soloist, and it’s become the heartbeat of my life.
